Tony,

I worked on developing the Ikon project in Belfast and have been following some of the emergent-US blogs lately. Part of my mandate as a postdoc with the National Council of Churches USA is to develop some connections with emergening networks. We're working on details for a July 2007 conference in Oberlin that might be a good forum for emerging ecclesiologies to participate in this model of dialogue (and the timing is particularly good if you have a major event in May). I'm pretty sure I could swing a trip up to Princeton to get a drink and share some thoughts. What is the event that you're speaking at?

Incidentally, the insider/outsider discussion surrounding your recent appointment as National Coordinator echoes of some trends we noted among the leadership cyndicate as Ikon developed - perhaps an area for further reflection...

Tony,

I am a 31 year-old youth pastor of 10 years and have been a diligent (yet rather silent) student of the Emergent conversation for quite awhile now. My first encounter with you was at your "Postmodern Youth Ministry" seminar at NYWC the last time it was in Sac (I think in 01 or 02?). The range of emotions I wrestled with in the days following that experience was frustratingly diverse, yet very fruitful. Even though at the time I was already well into my own journey of discovery and evaluation of the Emerging Church phenomenon, it was that seminar in particular that thrust me into a more agressive pursuit of greater clarity regarding the conversation.

You said some things at that seminar that enthused and discomforted me all at the same time. Until now, I have reserved my participation in the conversation to a sincere reading of many (if not most) of the books published by the likes of yourself, McClaren, Kimball, Seay, Sweet and numerous others. I have also engaged in much stimulating conversation with ministry colleagues and friends in person. During this process, I have purposefully avoided much interaction via the web regarding the Emergent Church, simply because I have wanted to read as much of the literature as possible apart from the opinions of bloggers, etc., so as to (as much as possible) formulate opinions that might be somewhat less colored than they may have been had I particpated in other ways.

In any regard, while I continue to wrestle with my evaluations of the larger conversation, I want to say thanks for unknowingly frustrating me into an exploration of faith that has been rewarding, difficult, frightening and assuring all at once. Your writings have forced me to think more humbly and thoroughly about issues of faith and ministry.

While I understand that your time will be very limited in Sacramento, I will also be attending the NYWC there this fall. I'd love the chance to interact with you over a beverage and to discuss ways in which I might better contribute to this critical, emerging conversation.

Bless you...

What is your schedule like when you are in Pittsburgh? Would you like to talk with some college campus ministers?

Tony,

I am a youth pastor in Mount Vernon, OH and when I heard that you were coming to the University here in town, I was really excited. The reason I was excited was that this university is pretty conservative, so I wanted to warn you that some people may get up and walk out. I am sure this is nothing new for you, but I wanted you to have a heads up.

Also, I would love to get together with you for lunch or dinner or a drink. I have read your books and other emergent books. I am a Nazarene, but went to a more liberal Nazarene college so I have been dealing with post modern stuff for a little while. I will also be presenting at the seminar that you will be at, but with the teens.

I do not know you schedule at all, but if you are free the night before, or if you need a ride from the airport just let me know.

Hope to hear from you soon. Talk with you later.
