Ministry is...

Today I randomly remembered a quote from Bill Pannell, Professor of Preaching at Fuller Theological Seminary. When I was a student there, years ago, we occasionally went out to lunch, and one time he said:

"Ministry is the joining of spirit and practice for liberative transformation."

I think that's beautiful.

Great quote! I think that most evangelicals have focused too much on the first part (spirit meets practice) and less on the second. I'm wondering if Emergent will truly step up to the plate and work for the liberation of the whole person. My denomination focuses almost totally on "spiritual liberation"--almost as a "get out of hell free card." (cf. the new push by the Southern Baptist Convention president to save a million souls). It seems that some mainline denominations focus entirely on "social liberation." It seems to me that those of us who wish to minister in an emergent context in today's post-colonial world need to rethink the boundaries of what "liberating transformation" could look like. Peace.
