tough weekend...

...for Minnesota sports fans. The Twins caved in memorable fashion, the Gophers choked, and the Vikes squeezed by the Texans in OT after leading 21-0. Ugly all around.

In happier news, the NYWC in Dallas was great -- lots of time catching up with friends, meeting new ones etc. One of the new ones is Mike Pilavachi with whom I had a scintillating conversation one night. Mike, Marko, and I all bemoaned the tendency that human beings seem to have to firmly establish themselves in ideological camps on the left and the right (theological, political, and otherwise). Mike, a self-described charismatic Anglican Christian, cannot imagine having a theology that values the charisms without those charisms driving one to real-life social action on behalf of the oppressed. The otherwordly focus of most American Pentecostals and charismatics he finds quite baffling. He is clearly a friend of emergent.

My seminar on youth ministry in the emerging church went quite well, I thought, but the seminar on pop culture seemed to get bogged down in the middle. I'm going to have to rework it for Atlanta.

Got home tonight around 7:30, having been gone for 11 days, and hugged and kissed everyone till they all fell asleep. Now I'm going to sleep, too. Good night.

I heard Mike speak a number of times here in Malaysia. I resonate with many of the concerns he has about Pentecostal/Charismatic Christianity (esp. the other-worldly bit). I think his approach and sessions provided a good corrective to much that's going on here especially in youth ministry. Sadly, I noticed that Soul survivor couldn't pick up its momentum for the better and at times existing frameworks we have here (which often lacks a wider theological vision because we tend to be over-pragmatic) hindered us from partnering for greater benefit. :-)

as one in the pop culture seminar i think it was the distractions (the leaving of the p.o.'d youth) that threw off the center - but it was definately worth it for entertainment factor alone! glad to hear you made your plane.

I thought your seminar on the Emerging Church went pretty well too. I greatly enjoyed it. I'm kind of bummed though that the video you showed is not for sale. I'd love to see the whole thing. If you email me the title and publishing information, I'd be happy do what I can to try and track down a way to get copies, and let you know what I find out.

i thorougly enjoyed the seminar on youth ministry in the emerging church. i purposely chose that seminar as the one that i wanted my volunteers to attend with me. it was the source of much discussion on the way home to san antonio.
i'm curious to see how all of this plays out in the larger Church. what will be the legacy of the emerging church discussion, i wonder?
