Wheaton Week
Back from the beaches of Naples, Florida, we're due for two days of what they call a "rain-snow mix" in Minnesota. That's good for keeping me indoors for my my assignment, which is to finish up (begin?) my presentation to the Wheaton Theology Conference on Friday. It's a daunting task, to be sure. But I think I've got a line on it. The title is "Whence Hermeneutic Authority?", and I'll be attempting to both describe how the emergent church movement approaches hermeneutics and suggest a thoughtful way forward. I'm beginning with an extended analogy (that has to do with baseball), then move to description of the emergent church, then philosophical considerations, then normative theological suggestions, and, finally, practical solutions. So far, I've nailed down part one and moved into part two...

A baseball analogy? How very Hauerwasian of you.
Hi Tony,
We've got an April snow storm coming here in the Dartmouth Lake Sunapee region on Thursday. I'm glad I don't coach baseball any more as it would be a nightmare of a spring here.
When you get you description done of the Emergent Church I'd love to see it. Maybe I could publish it on AM and CRN... I'd truly even be interested in reading your entire presentation. Feel free to correspond or send anything you'd like to: apprising@hughes.net
FYI, I really don't need "iggy" to keep me honest. For example what I wrote about concerning your F-bomb came from you personally recommending here on this blog to go to the article on the other site from which I literally quoted what you personally wrote. Pretty honest I'd say and I still say you strike me as a nice guy. Similar to Dan, though maybe you're a little feistier. :-)
As far as iggy, well he's already made a number of blunders attempting to understand what I say. Seems like a nice enough guy also though, just misguided.
would love to see your stuff on hermeneutics - I am writing a PhD thesis on leadership and missional/Emerging church in the UK and keep getting stuck on the hermeneutic question - please could I see you notes?
Tony,
Thanks for the link!
Ken,
Still praying for Gods Grace to pour out upon you in such a beautiful way.
And that you are immersed in Gods mercy and swim in the ocean of Gods love.
And that as Christ Jesus dwells in you, you dwell in Him.
And that Jesus becomes your very Life as He has become mine.
Be Blessed!
iggy
Tony,
I heard my friend Brandon Mick met you. He said you did a bang up job at Wheaton. I knew you would.
Brandon
Fascinating. I actually blogged a couple days ago on epistemology and doctrinal formation... a pretty basic chronology, but laden with implications.
Wish I could be at the conference. My 2-yr-old daughter is preventative from coming. God speed to you.
* WAS preventative from coming. ;-)
Tony,
For the record on a personal level I do not see using "swear words" as appropriate. I would say this to you personally yet I do not think we will be meeting together that soon...
That being said i have my copy of the emergent manifesto of hope and am really looking forward to reading it.
Feel free to contact me anytime if you desire to talk more... my contact info in on my blog.
Be blessed my dear brother!
iggy
Hey Tony I am wanting to get into a little bit more of epistemology and I was wondering if there was a particular book/s you would recommend? Anyways take care!
